Counselors' student interviews 2010-11. pdf
During the fall of 2009, Dr. Cohn spoke to an audience of district elementary, middle and high school counselors and outlined his vision and priorities for Everett Public Schools. Areas of focus included: student achievement—the next 20%, on-time graduation, college/work ready and students of color. Dr. Cohn described the current state of these priorities and shared student achievement data in our district. He enumerated statistics identifying the achievement gap that exists for our students of color and expressed his desire for district counselors to join the work of district administration by engaging this issue. Dr. Cohn gave district counselors a challenge in response to his vision and priorities. Dr. Cohn challenged the counselors to have an in-depth conversation with every African-American and Native American student in their school. Following the interviews with African-American and Native American students, Dr. Cohn challenged the district counselors to then conduct interviews with Hispanic students. District counselors interviewed all 5th, 8th and 12th grade Hispanic students.
